Our healthy homes programme will help reduce illness caused by cold and damp housing…

We have been successful in securing funding to launch an exciting new project. The Healthy Homes fund, awarded by the British Gas Energy Trust, will see us work alongside Plymouth City Council, Public Health, and Livewell Southwest (formerly Plymouth Community Healthcare) to address the impact that poor housing can have on health.

We have recruited two full-time, fixed-term case workers to provide a holistic approach to the issues faced. They work with individuals, referred from local health services, who have existing health conditions exacerbated by the cold or damp, such as respiratory problems and cardiovascular disease. They can provide bespoke advice, as well as oversee the installation of physical measures into homes, such as heating systems and ventilation to ensure homes can be kept warm and dry.

Our Energy Team have visited over 60 households in the last 10 months and we have met many people with debilitating illnesses that are intensified or even caused by their cold, damp, draughty living conditions. Residents that have benefited from our recent external wall insulation scheme have since reported a significant improvement in their health.

This fantastic project takes our work a step further by giving us the funds to make a real difference to the lives of people who are really struggling, as well as gain vital evidence to highlight this issue to health boards for future funding decisions.

The year-long project will target 100 households and will be evaluated by Public Health. We hope to show both the positive impact on an individual’s health and return on investment, with key targets being a reduction in GP visits and hospital admissions.

Programme update

Find out how are Healthy Homes team are already out and about, helping poorly Plymouth residents:

Cat's April update

Our new programme is up and running, providing a holistic approach to help Plymouth residents with existing health conditions made worse by cold, damp homes. We've got 13 cases on the go; referred by partner organisations such as Livewell Southwest and Plymouth City Council.

We've already helped people with our income maximisation check. It’s amazing to see people’s surprise when we explain what benefits they are entitled to. Our first success with the Attendance Allowance has increased one couple’s income by over £4000 per year!

As for physical measures, it’s the end of the line for the 27 year old boiler causing havoc in a 3 bed home in Derriford, plus we’ve got three gas central heating systems booked in to fit.

We hope to make chronic coughs and colds a thing of the past for families we have visited with condensation damp in their homes. As well as giving advice on lifestyle changes to avoid it, we have identified residents who will benefit from new ventilation systems in their kitchen and bedrooms.

We are currently sourcing local installers to ensure our cases are matched with the best people to carry out work on our behalf. Once we have them on board, we will be busy collecting quotes and managing the workload.

One thing we have learnt is that if Healthy Homes can’t help, we know someone who can! We point people in the right direction by introducing them to other services in Plymouth. We have already put a family in touch with the Disabled Facility Grants team at the council.    All in all, Healthy Homes has got off to a great start, Jake and I are loving our new roles and we are excited about the coming months!
