Run in partnership with the government and energy suppliers, the Warm Home Discount is a five year programme that aims to provide reductions on the electricity bills of those who need it most.

The Warm Home Discount scheme will offer eligible customers a one-off discount on your electricity bills, usually between October and March, which for winter 2013 – 2014 will be £135.

The discount won’t affect your Cold Weather Payment or Winter Fuel Payment.

How does the Warm Home Discount scheme work?

A one-off reduction of £135 (inclusive of VAT) will be deducted from your electricity bills for those who qualify for the scheme. The money won’t be paid to you directly.

If you are on a pre-payment meter, you can still qualify for the discount.

To find out more about the Warm Home Discount scheme, contact your supplier today.

Who is eligible for the Warm Home Discount?

You may qualify for the Warm Home Discount scheme if on 20th July 2013 (the ‘qualifying’ day) your supplier was part of the scheme, you or your partner’s name was on the bill or you were either:

- Aged 75 or over and are receiving the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit (even if you receive Savings Credit)
- Aged 75 or under and are only getting the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit (you won’t qualify for this if you are also getting Savings Credit)

Those who don’t qualify under the points mentioned above may still be able to receive the Warm Home Discount. Each energy supplier has their own criteria for the scheme, so contact them to find out if you qualify.

How to claim for the Warm Home Discount if you do qualify

If you qualify for the discount, you’ll get a letter telling you one of the following:

- You don’t have to apply for the discount – you’ll get it automatically
- You must apply for the discount before the deadline – the letter will tell you why and how

Please note: The closing date to apply for Year 3 of the scheme is 14th March 2014 – applications must be received and assessed by this date. You will need to apply for the scheme each year.
